[This is Music] Song of the Day – Planet A (TDWP)

I’ve been jamming this song over and over since yesterday morning.

Mostly, I’ve been trying to figure out what to make of it. You see, The Devil Wears Prada has always had a unique sound that has set them apart from other metal bands. Though they weren’t the first to combine synth and metal, nor even “techno” and metal, they managed to find a way of doing it that I find fascinating. While their albums talk rather explicitly about faith, their last two EPs have been about seemingly random ideas (zombies, and now space). Perhaps this new EP grabs my attention because of Interstellar (which, by the way, I really enjoyed), or maybe it’s the dramatic flair present in the instrumentation, but this song swept me away like a tidal wave and swallowed me into the story. Allow me to give you a preview into the beginning of their new EP.

The song begins with a dialogue between “gateway” and “control” while ambiance builds in the background. The dialogue concludes, and a piano lead takes you into space while the words “we are go for launch, over” echo into nothingness. You can feel the engines building pressure and, like a shot, the words “radio check, GO” send you shooting into the sky. You can feel the pressure in your heart. The shuttle leaves the atmosphere and you can feel space envelop you.. Then the story begins: A tale of a young girl who dreamed of being an astronaut. She grew up planning her life around this dream and finally saw it to fruition. As she prepared to depart on a journey to explore beyond our solar system, however, she was unaware that something would go awry. Now, deep in space, the shuttle experiences a malfunction, and she screams in anger and helplessness as the shuttle’s hull is breached and they crash down. She alone survives, and finds herself living alone on a mysterious planet, which is codenamed “A”. Really, it wouldn’t make a bad movie idea.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Lyrics:

Radio check, go
Where shall we begin?

Not long ago, a young girl knew what she wanted to be
So she trained and she learned to travel and explore the unknown galaxy

Elizabeth had a dream
Maybe like you, maybe like me
Mankind searched the universe
Curiosity can be a curse
Elizabeth had a dream
Maybe like you, maybe like me

Exploration expanding
A dire mission withstanding
Far away a ship flew interplanetary
Elizabeth, the commander, she wasn’t ready
For the malfunction, for the malfunction
The shuttle had been off
It was unprepared, it wasn’t fit to fly
“Houston!” she screamed
“Houston, we’ve been breached!”

There was a survivor, just one survivor, without anyone
Without anyone

Elizabeth had a dream
Maybe like you, maybe like me
Mankind searched the universe
Curiosity can be a curse
Elizabeth had a dream
Maybe like you, maybe like me

A woman lives far away on an unknown planet called “A”
There was a survivor, just one survivor, without anyone
